“Zhangjiajie” is not one park — that is the first thing to fix
It is easy to assume the Avatar pillars, the glass bridge and the cliff skywalk are all in one place. They are three different ticketed sites, 40–60 minutes apart. Getting this right at the planning stage is the difference between a relaxed trip and a rushed one.
⛰️ Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) — the sandstone pillars known as the Avatar Mountains, plus Bailong Elevator and Golden Whip Stream.
🚠 Tianmen Mountain — the famous cable car, Heaven’s Gate and the cliff glass skywalk, right above the city.
🌉 Grand Canyon — home of the famous Glass Bridge, and a popular stop with international travelers.

★★★★★
“We had three days and no idea the sites were so far apart. The route they gave us put us on Yuanjiajie before the tour buses and we still made the glass bridge the next morning.”

Common questions
Zhangjiajie planning FAQ
How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?
Most first-time visitors allow three to four days: one to two full days for the National Forest Park, one day for Tianmen Mountain, and a half day for the Glass Bridge. Two days can work if the sandstone pillars are your only goal.
Are the Avatar Mountains inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?
Yes. The quartz sandstone pillars known as the Avatar Mountains sit inside the National Forest Park, part of the wider Wulingyuan scenic area. The best-known viewpoints are in Yuanjiajie, including the pillar officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain. Read the full Avatar Mountains guide.
Can you visit Zhangjiajie without a tour?
Yes — tickets are digital, shuttle buses run inside the park, and mobile payment works almost everywhere. Local planning help mainly saves time on ticketing, route sequencing and mountain transport. See our self-guided guide.
What is the difference between Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan and the National Forest Park?
Zhangjiajie is the city. Wulingyuan is the district that contains the National Forest Park, where the Avatar Mountains stand. Tianmen Mountain and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge are separate ticketed sites roughly 40–60 minutes away.
How much are Zhangjiajie tickets?
Each of the three main sites is ticketed separately. The National Forest Park pass is multi-day and covers internal transport, though the exact structure is adjusted from time to time; Tianmen Mountain is sold as a package that includes the cable car; the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is a separate timed-entry ticket. Prices move with the season, so check the current figure before you book — our park ticket guide keeps the up-to-date breakdown, and the summary above was last checked in October 2026.
How much does it cost to plan a trip with you?
