Heaven’s Gate, the opening through the cliff face on Tianmen Mountain, above Zhangjiajie city.

THE SHORT VERSION

The cliff site directly above Zhangjiajie city

Tianmen Mountain is one of Zhangjiajie’s main attractions, sitting directly above the city rather than out at Wulingyuan. A cable car climbs from the middle of Zhangjiajie to the summit, and from up there the city looks like a map.

The site is known for Heaven’s Gate — a natural opening right through the cliff, reached by a staircase of 999 steps — plus the walkways that run along the vertical rock face.

WHAT THE DAY LOOKS LIKE

A sample day on Tianmen Mountain

Early morning
Cable car up from the city centre

The lower station sits in Zhangjiajie city. Queues build through the morning, which is the main reason we plan around an early slot.

Mid-morning
The cliff walkways on the summit

Paths bolted to the vertical rock face, with sections of glass underfoot. Mostly level walking along the cliff.

Late morning
Summit temples and forest paths

The upper plateau has temples and shaded paths away from the main viewpoints. This is where lunch fits most naturally.

Afternoon
Heaven’s Gate and the 999 steps

Walk the 999-step staircase down, or take the escalators inside the mountain.

Late afternoon
Down by the 99-bend road

The road winds down from the mountain giving you a very different view, or the return can also be arranged by cable car.

HIKING & DIFFICULTY

How hard Tianmen Mountain actually is

LEAST EFFORT

Cable car, escalators, level walkways

The cable car does the height, the escalators can replace much of the stair climbing.

MIDDLE GROUND

Cable car up, walk the summit

Ride up, then cover the summit on foot and finish with Heaven’s Gate.

MOST EFFORT

The 999 steps, on your own feet

Climb or descend the staircase instead of taking the escalators.

Tianmen Mountain tours FAQ

Where is Tianmen Mountain?

Tianmen Mountain stands directly above Zhangjiajie city, and the cable car’s lower station is in the city centre, so you do not need to travel out to Wulingyuan to reach it.

Is Tianmen Mountain the same as the Avatar Mountains?

No. They are two different sites roughly 40 to 60 minutes apart. The sandstone pillars are inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, while Tianmen Mountain is the cliff-and-arch site above the city.

How many steps are there, and can I avoid climbing them?

The staircase up to Heaven’s Gate has 999 steps. Escalators built inside the mountain can reduce the number of steps you climb, and the walkways along the cliff are mostly level.

How long does a Tianmen Mountain visit take?

A Tianmen Mountain visit can take anywhere from half a day to a full day, depending on your route, walking pace and time spent at Heaven’s Gate.
